Your first tattoo is a big moment, and it's normal to arrive with more questions than answers. Who should do it? What will it cost? How much will it hurt? This guide walks through everything a first-timer should know before booking in Melbourne, from choosing the right artist to looking after it once it's done.

1. Start with the style, then find the artist

Every artist has a style they do best. Fine line, traditional, realism, Japanese and lettering are different crafts, and the right artist for a delicate floral piece isn't necessarily the right one for a bold traditional swallow. Start with the look you love, then find who specialises in it.

At Umbra, every artist specialises. Browse our tattoo styles or meet the artists, or simply send us your idea and we'll match you with the right person.

2. Choose a size and placement that will age well

Smaller isn't always simpler. Fine detail needs room to breathe, and tiny, intricate designs are the first to soften over time. If your artist suggests going a little bigger or simplifying a detail, it's usually to protect how the tattoo will look in ten years.

The outer forearm, upper arm, calf and thigh are popular first placements: easy to look after and simple to cover when you need to. Hands, fingers and feet fade faster than elsewhere, so plan on a touch-up if you choose them.

3. How much will it cost?

Every tattoo is priced on its size, detail, placement and the artist doing it, so there's no single answer. The quickest way to find out is our instant quote, which gives you a rough figure in a couple of minutes. Larger pieces get a clear estimate at a free consultation, before anything is booked.

4. Booking and the consultation

Simpler pieces can usually be quoted and booked straight away by chat or email. For anything bigger or more detailed, start with a free consultation, where you and your artist plan the design, placement, price and number of sessions. Bring reference images if you have them, but don't worry if your idea is still loose. Shaping it is part of the artist's job.

5. Does it hurt?

Some spots more than others, and it varies a lot from person to person. Our artists are great at keeping you comfortable, with regular breaks whenever you need them. There are free lollies and soft drinks on hand, and our studio manager makes barista coffees for everyone. Bring headphones, a book, snacks and comfortable clothes: anything that helps you settle in and stay distracted.

6. On the day

  • Eat a proper meal beforehand and bring water. Sessions go much better on a full stomach.
  • Get a good night's sleep and skip alcohol the night before.
  • Wear something comfortable that gives easy access to the area being tattooed.
  • Bring photo ID. In Victoria you must be 18 or over to be tattooed, even with a parent's permission.
  • Check the stencil. Your artist will place the design on your skin before starting. This is the moment to adjust size or position, so speak up.

7. Looking after it

Keep your new tattoo clean, lightly moisturised and out of the sun, and avoid swimming or soaking it while it heals. Don't pick or scratch, even when it itches. Our tattoo aftercare guide walks you through it day by day.

Frequently asked questions

Is fine line a good choice for a first tattoo?

Yes. Fine line, small and script pieces are some of the most popular first tattoos. Just leave enough room for the detail, and protect it from the sun once healed.

Can I walk in?

When an artist is free, yes. If you have someone specific in mind, send an enquiry first so we can make sure they're available.

What if I'm nervous?

Tell your artist. They see first-timers all the time, and they'll explain each step, go at your pace and stop whenever you need a break.

Ready for your first tattoo?

Tell us your idea and we'll match you with the right artist, whether it's a small first piece or the start of something bigger.
