About Umbra
A Fitzroy studio built around specialists
Umbra was founded by tattooers Ben Thomas and Ben Smith, who between them have spent more than 30 years in the industry. Having worked in studios all over the world, they set out to build something different: a private, high-end gallery instead of the traditional back-alley tattoo shop.
The result is a bright converted warehouse on Gore Street, home to a team of resident artists who each specialise in their own style, from fine line and lettering to Japanese, neo-traditional and large-scale realism. Clients rate it 5.0 from more than 90 Google reviews.

395-397 Gore Street, Fitzroy VIC 3065, near Johnston and Brunswick Streets. Open Monday to Saturday, 9am–6pm. Street parking nearby is limited, so allow a few extra minutes.

Do you take walk-ins, or do I need to book?
We welcome walk-ins when an artist is free. If you'd like a specific artist, send an enquiry first so we can make sure they're available.
How do I pick an artist?
Browse the styles and portfolios on this site, or just tell us your idea and we'll match you with whoever suits it best.
Do you do custom work and flash?
Both. Bring your own idea and we'll draw it custom, or pick from our flash if you'd rather something ready to go.
Do you do consultations?
Yes, especially for bigger or more detailed pieces. It's the best way to plan it properly. Smaller pieces can usually be quoted straight from your enquiry.
