Why Umbra
Why trust Umbra with your realism piece
01
Realism is hard. We specialise in it
Micro-detail, portraits and soft gradients demand real technical mastery. Our artists have built their names on exactly this work.
02
Co-founded by a realism artist
Umbra was co-founded by Ben Thomas, internationally recognised for large-scale black and grey realism.
03
Detail that lasts
We plan size and contrast so fine detail stays sharp as the tattoo ages, not muddy in five years.
04
Built for big projects
Sleeves, backpieces and bodysuits, planned across sessions in a calm, private Fitzroy studio.

FAQs
Why choose black and grey over colour?
Black and grey realism is timeless, suits every skin tone and ages beautifully. It's ideal for portraits, statues, wildlife and moody, high-contrast pieces.
How small can a realism tattoo go?
Micro-realism can be surprisingly small, but there is a limit. Too small and fine detail blurs as it heals. We'll advise the smallest size that will still look sharp in years to come.
Can you tattoo a portrait from my photo?
Yes. A clear, high-resolution reference with good lighting is ideal for portraits of people and pets. The better the photo, the better the result.
How many sessions will I need?
Small pieces are usually one sitting. Larger, detailed work is often split across sessions to keep quality high and keep you comfortable. We'll plan this with your quote.
Does it hurt more than other styles?
Realism involves shading and layering, so sessions can be longer, but pain comes down to placement more than style. We'll talk you through it.
Do I need a deposit?
Yes. A small deposit confirms your booking and is deducted from your final price.
Where are you?
We're at 395-397 Gore Street, Fitzroy, a bright gallery studio near Johnston and Brunswick Streets.
